In Memory of Philip Caplan

Many of you will know that around this time last year, I took over the business of Caplan Associates, and Philip passed away shortly afterwards.

Philip’s strapline was “Accountants who Care” and he really did embody that in his approach. So many of his clients have emphasised to me his warmth and care. He didn't just see his clients as numbers on a spreadsheet. He saw them as people with hopes and challenges. He took the time to understand their businesses and their lives. He offered sound financial advice, but always with humanity and empathy.

The importance of care and the human touch in the accountant-client relationship cannot be overstated. Many see accountancy as the epitome of the grey and the impersonal, but the reality is so much of what we do as small business accountants is deeply personal and often emotionally charged. When hiring an accountant, you are not just hiring someone to do your taxes. You are hiring someone to help you achieve your financial goals, a trusted advisor, and a sounding board.

An accountant who cares will take the time to understand your business and your personal financial situation. They will offer sound financial advice, but they will also offer a listening ear and, on occasion, a box of tissues. They will be there for you when you need them, both good times and bad.

Philip's passing was a great loss to his family, clients, his colleagues, and his community. He was a true gentleman, generous with his time, and a gifted accountant. He took a particular interest in charities and served as a trustee for several. But more importantly, he was a caring and compassionate person who made a difference in the lives of many people.
